Gonarezhou National Park annual closure for maintenance and conservation to run till the end of February…
Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe’s second-largest wildlife reserve’s annual closure commenced on place January 14 and will run till the end of February 2025.
The temporary shutdown aligns with the peak of the rainy season, allowing for critical maintenance work on camps and infrastructure within the park.
The park’s management, the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust (GCT), a partnership between the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) and the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), implemented the closure as part of its long-term conservation strategy.
The maintenance period will focus on repairing facilities, upgrading amenities, and ensuring that the park is in prime condition for visitors once it reopens.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, the closure provides much-needed rest for camp attendants, enabling them to spend time with their families before the next tourism season begins.
Gonarezhou, known for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, attracts nature lovers and wildlife photographers seeking an authentic safari experience.
Situated in southeastern Zimbabwe, the park is home to diverse ecosystems, ranging from vast savannas and dense woodlands to winding rivers.
It boasts a wide range of wildlife, including large elephant herds, lions, and numerous bird species.
The seasonal closure also plays a crucial role in reducing disturbances to wildlife during the wet months when many species are at their most vulnerable.
Gonarezhou’s remote setting, bordering Mozambique and South Africa, makes it a hidden gem for travelers seeking an unspoiled wilderness experience.
While the park operates year-round, access during the rainy season can be limited, particularly to remote camps where heavy rains may render roads impassable.
Tourists planning a visit are encouraged to schedule their trips before the closure or after reopening in March.
As Gonarezhou continues to attract more eco-conscious travelers, its commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism remains steadfast, ensuring that future generations can experience Zimbabwe’s untamed beauty.
